Ear syringing clinic is run by the Practice Nurses. Appointments can be made at reception or via the doctor or nurse.
Ears are prone to produce wax - a substance that helps protect the delicate skin of the ear canal. Sometimes wax can occlude the canal and block the passage of sound leading to deafness. In these cases syringing the ears may improve hearing. However deafness is not necessarily caused by wax.
To soften the wax prior to syringing (soft wax is easier to syringe out), water or olive oil should be used for up to a week beforehand. One small drop in both ears twice daily. In some cases this may be enough to loosen and remove the wax, making syringing unnecessary.
Syringing is carried out using a special piece of equipment that generates a controlled pressure of water to wash out the wax. It is much safer than the large syringe used in days gone by.
Not all ears are safe to use drops in or syringe. This is particularly so if you have chronic ear problems or a history of perforation to the eardrum. In these cases a referral to an ear specialist (ENT surgeon) may be needed. Always discuss with the nurse or doctor.
