The Health Visitors are registered nurses who have at least two years nursing experience before undertaking further training of at least one year.

Every child under four registered at the surgery has a named Health Visitor. They make an antenatal visit to all pregnant women and liaise closely with the midwives. The Health Visitors provide support and information to help parents.

They can advise on many family health topics including every day difficulties such as feeding and sleeping as well as child health surveillance, immunisation programmes, parenting classes, managing difficult behaviour and any special needs individual children may have. The Health Visitors can provide one-to-one help over a short period of time to help parents overcome any difficulties they may experience and support the whole family. They can also point the way to specialist help for a variety of problems including bereavement, illness and family conflict as well as provide research-based advice about healthy life styles and health promotion.

The Health Visitors work closely with other members of the primary health care team including GPs, CPNs (Community Psychiatric Nurses), Practice Nurses and the School Nurse. They are subject to a professional code of conduct that requires them to act in the best interests of their clients.
